Default ipod to new laptop

My friends laptop died, so father Christmas has brung her a new one. Shes got an ipod full of songs, she wants to put on the new laptop, but has been told by her brother that this is not possible, can someone clarify if this is true, and if she is able to do it, how.

The old laptop is extinct so its highly unlikely that it can be booted up long
enough to get the songs onto a memory stick or something.

Heeeeellllllp!

I believe said brother is correct. The transfer is one-way.

There are a couple of options here:
  • Attempt to resurrect said laptop.
  • Extricate the hard drive and attempt to resurrect that.
  • If the tunes were purchased via iTunes Store, attempt to re-download them. I've heard reports this is possible either directly or after pleading with Apple.

See to me it beggars belief that apple can get away with that. For example if this was me, i've spent a couple of hundred quid on my itunes legally purchasing songs/albums, they can see all the money thats gone out of my account, so how can they not let me put said songs back onto a new laptop.

As in I don't get the logic behind this.

it's not true..... the ipod can be used as a removable drive. May depend on the type of ipod too.

But... it's pretty long winded and it depends on how far she has got with putting stuff on it....if Itunes is installed already .. uninstall it!

Once uninstalled plug the ipod in to the laptop, go to my computer and double click on the removable drive (your ipod) you might not see everything in here so you need to make sure hidden files are shown.

Click on iPod_Control and then copy the folder called music to your desktop, Unplug the iPod and install iTunes
One itunes is installed import the Music folder you just saved to your desk top into iTunes.

Works dandy for my ancient pLod

well in that case.. if she has stuff on her phone too... make sure that she goes to edit>preferences>Devices and checks the box next to prevent ipods, iphones and ipads from syncing automatically.

Then you may well be able to do the drag and drop from there .. but alas I am very ancient and have only ever moved the one ipod from pc to pc etc...

Certainly doesn't work with iPhone (I've plugged one in to check), but here's hoping.

Stuff purchased on iTunes might still not work though - YMMV.

I've recovered songs from a 4th gen iPod via it being a removable drive. There is various software you can download that will copy all the music off the ipod onto the PC and you then just re-add to iTunes. I've done that with a 3GS so it should work with the touch.

There are ways it can be done, it's much easier with older iPods that allowed you to put them in removable storage mode. Newer iOS based devices don't allow this functionality though.

You'll need some third party software to do it and chances are, sticking to the free offerings will just result in a host of songs named with 4 random letters in random folders.

They do it intentionally to prevent piracy, no record label would sign up to iTunes if you could just go around copying all your music back off your iPod onto other PCs.

You could try some software such as MediaMonkey which can let you transfer songs much easier than iTunes. Not used it in a while though so not sure how well it works any more.
