Default Winter flu death toll over 600 this year

I guess since I just got over another dose of real flu this poked a nerve when it came on the news. I had it bad enough that I had to get to a doctor and then suffered a secondary infection as a result of being weakened by it.

There has been a lot of speculation about how swine flu has spread but little actual data. When I went to the doctor I was just told it was a virus, so it could have been any strain of flu. No other tests and no diagnosis as such. I wasn't that bothered because I was there to check it wasn't meningitis developing, but surely if they wish to plough millions into vaccine stocks they ought to monitor what viruses people are getting and what areas it is spreading in? How much can a routine blood test cost? Otherwise, what's the point in having a load of vaccine if it's not for what people are getting?
