Default Scamtastic?

I've just had an enthusiastic gentleman with a foreign accent assuring me that he will be at the train station next Saturday with cash to buy the old Jag, all he needs is the V5C serial number, the chassis number and the Reg Number before he comes up.

Now, my initial instincts are "yeah, right" but, to be fair, the number he rang from (and that I rang him back on) is currently showing as a contact number for a 10 day old advert selling a couple of kittens on a pet site, and has also been listed as a contact number on an eBay sale for some mobile disco kit asking for collection only (for which the seller has 100% positive feedback, for what that's worth), both lists the number as the same place down near dartford. The HPI website does say that to guarentee their check you need to supply the information he requested, so it's not surprising that people will ask for it, I suppose.

If this guy really is interested in the car (he apparently want's me to pick him up from the station so he can drive it straight home, cash sale, blah, blah, blah...) I suppose it would make sense to do as much checking as you can before you head off to look at the vehicle, unless you wish to spend the money and hassle of coming up more than once.

I dunno, my spidey-senses are tingling, but it doesn't help that HPI are telling people to ask for all the info you need to clone a V5. It just sounds too good to be true, he even offered to send me a deposit so I don't sell it as he'll have to buy the train tickets and doesn't want me to flog it on Friday to someone else.... What think you guys? Scam or just some guy who wants to be totally sure he's not buying a pup before he makes an expensive 3 hour journey?

I see what you mean. There is keen to view, then there is too keen. Really a 3 hour journey to view a car is nothing for the right one. I would just give him the reg at this stage, its enough to be able to see if it has been wrapped round a tree or has been into a garage with 50k more than its showing.

Just don't tell me its at a bargain price as I might start twitching as a short term car till next year

Why does he want all those details?

I'd just ask and offer the reg details and apologise about asking it's just in your nature as a copper (fake ittttt )

Well, the HPI check website won't guarantee its report is acurate unless you supply the V5C serial number.

VIN (chassis number) WBADT220AN52ZXX
V5 Registration Document serial number AB1234567
V5 Registration Document issue date 12-Mar-2008
So it is a legitimate question, to be fair...

He just needs the reg number to see the car history. Tell him he can check the rest of the details tally when he comes to see the car, by checking the numbers he gets from HPI check against the chassis number and V5.

I would also feel nervous giving out all that information.

HNNNNGG!! Dammit!

That really is in impulse buy territory, especially after I've slapped you about a bit on the price

It should go at that price though.

It's between me and that bloody Mondeo. One of us is going to break, probably me unless someone writes the thing off! I am looking at next year to get rid if it doesn't die by then..... Which it won't ...... just to annoy me!

Talked that one up Matt.

My spidey senses tell me there'll be more activity in this thread in the near future...
