Default NUC build?

ahoy shipmates!

My trusty macbook pro has started falling apart under the strain of 24/7 life as a server and plex machine.

I'm in the market for a new computer, and having been out of the PC building lark for 6 years there's a hell of a lot of changes out there!

My instant thought was get a Mac mini for £500. 2.5Ghz Intel i5, 4GB Ram, 500gb HDD and Intel HD4000 graphics.

I've seen some of these NUC bare bones and they look rather impressive, and looked at the options of an ITX or mATX build and things seem like I might be able to get more for less but I honestly don't know.

Is anyone on the boat up to date with hardware that would be able to help me spec a machine?

Ta!

Matt.

If you decide to go the Mac Mini route, you may want to hang fire for a few weeks. Rumour has it OS X Mavericks is due out in 2-3 weeks, and the Mac Mini is due a refresh, so the two might happen together. While macs tend not to discount much, you may still be able to find an older model for less.

Obviously, the risk in that is not finding an old model and a new model price hike, though Apple quietly bumped the prices recently so that's less likely.

I saw that on the way home that the new haswell Mac minis *should* be out in a week or so. Have just purchased all the bits I need to fix the mbp so should have bought a little more time to see how the new hardware looks and wait for the haswell NUC boards to come out.
