Default What's a better way to Overclock?

So what's better for my E6600?

Just increase fsb or decrease multiplier and increase the fsb further?

The default multiplier is 9.

If I set the fsb to 1266 then I get a clock speed of 2.85GHz

Or I can reduce the multiplier to 8 and set the fsb to 1425 to get the same clock speed of 2.85GHz, and it's running cooler.

Is one way recognised as being better than the other at all?

Always try to get the highest FSB so drop that multi to 8

What are ya temps like at 2.85 ?

Higher FSB gives a marginal increase in performance at the same clock speed so always better to have it as high as possible - as long as your RAM can handle it.

Last night it was working fine at those speeds mentioned above, with Orthos running for a few hours on blend with no problems. Temps last night were 47-50 on Orthos blend at priority 9.

This morning after being off all night, I was getting BSOD on boot up so I've set everything back to stock.

I'm wondering if my 4 year old tube of AS5 has gone off. I had to use an awful lot to get a coating on the CPU and even though I got it as thin as I could, it still felt wrong. I seem to remember it being quite a thin product and easy to spread but it was thick and pasty.

At stock clocks and volts, I've got 33C.

I'm going to buy a new tube and re-apply before I do any more OCing.

I find the same with AS5. It tends to get thick and sticky as it ages and doesn't spread as well, giving an over thick layer. I've lost count of the number of half full tubes I've thrown out.

I've always found AS5 to be sticky and gluey, but once it warms up its much thinner, i heat it up then spread it, its much easier and you get a slightly better coat, and this feels really anal and geeky talking about it

And in some cases it can be quieter, and still keep temps cooler than air ever could.

Personally i use the reserator, because i want absolute silence, but it still allows me to overclock which i see as a bonus!
