What does it mean if..
.. my car pumps out black smoke when accellerating hard.
It's clean when idle or on normal drive. I've checke the oil.. not lost any.

Diesel: It will do it a bit anyway because that's what diesels do but it gets worse as the air filter gets clogged up. Solution: New air filter, economy and power will both rise.
Petrol: For some reason it's running very rich when you accelerate. Could be a blocked up air filter but unlikley, might be injectors not closing properly, could use some of that injector cleaner stuff in the petrol tank. Or as they say in Two Lane Blacktop "she's not running right, I think it's the jets..." but I doubt you're running a bigblock Chevy 454 with a tunnel ram and two Holleys. Edit: Blue or white stinky smoke is oil smoke.

I'd say that's normal. A lot of diesels put out a lot of black smoke when accelerating. Have you changed the type of fuel you've used? If you've had a service I'd have hoped they would have checked the filter or changed it if it needed changing...

When I had a diesel after a service they put some injector cleaners or some funny product in the fuel, for about 2/3 months I had lots of black smoke when accelerating it disappeared after a while.
