Default I <3 the AA

Checking the battery in the boot, I put my keys in there as I was wearing shorts. Cue a big wind, nearly chopped off fingers and the slow aching realisation that the car keys are in the boot with the car locked

Oh ****

Despite my best efforts with coathanger to hit the boot release button, I couldn't break into my car, so I thought I wouldn't have anything to lose by ringing the AA. The nice woman on the phone took my details and said the patrol would be around in about 50 minutes, which didn't worry me as I was at home, not on the side of the road.

While I was waiting I went to get a bottle of wine to have with dinner and an AA van appeared (this must have been a grand total of 1 minute after putting the phone down)

A really nice guy with loads of tatoos the proceeded to lift the bootlid of my car and pop the boot release in less time than it took to make a cup of coffee for him.

We then sat down and talked about BMWs and Mini coopers for half an hour and watched the first couple of minutes of the Wales v France game.

Dead impressed considering it would have cost £150 to call out a locksmith.

Guess I will be renewing next year too.

They've always been good to me and got me out of some potentially very dodgy or expensive situations.

How did he pop it?

I gave them my new address in Feb but they didn't bother updating my details. Because they didn't update I didn't get the renewal notice. They took money from my account, which was higher than the price I paid for and agreed on. Both called and emailled the day after they took it.

Took me a month and cost me a £14 "admin fee" to get the rest of my money back

The AA vans have a panasonic toughbook with loads of useful stuff on it, giving ideas on how to solve these problems, he inserted an inflatable pad in between the bootlid and the bodywork and inflated it til there was enough of a gap to see the wiring loom. It was just a case of then splicing into the correct wire for the boot release and applying 12volts.

By the time the kettle had boiled, and coffee made, he was holding my keys and had the boot open, I was well impressed.

It turns out he was coming along the M4 going home as he only lives a short distance away from me, so its all good.

What if you were a complete noob and hadn't separated the two keys and they were on the same keyring in the boot?

Sorry, I shouldn't laugh, but I did

I will say the AA were excellent for me. When I spun off the motorway a couple of years back, I rang them up, and though they informed me I wasn't covered for accidents (only breakdowns), because of the time (4am) and the location (just off a main motorway junction) they'd send out a van to tow me home free of charge. Very good company.

As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
