That is sensor dust, its relatively simple to clean it off. It will only show up at realllly small apertures though (which is why you can see it on that landscape so much).
Take a photo of a white piece of card at f/22 and you will see where all the dust is, then go out and get a sensor cleaning kit (cheap!) but don't buy a rocket blower type thing, you want the tissue swab type Thankfully the clone tool in Photoshop is *really* good at removing them, so your pics can be 'saved'. |

Desaturated, sorted the levels out, applied an S curve, adjusted the white balance and I think I sharpened it but the GIMP seems to be pretty poor at sharpening?

That photo was TOTAL luck, 90% of the others I took look awful, the light was very poor all week and although the scenery looked beautiful to the eye the pics don't reflect it
I'll have a look at the rest and see if I can salvage any but there aren't many worth keeping MB |

The one thing thats jumping out there is the blown out highlights in the sky. I'm guessing the camera is metering for whats in front and its just not bright enough compared to the sky. Its quite obvious on the landscape shot, especially after editing.
If you shoot RAW you can rescue it by reducing the exposure or using the recovery slider in adobe camera raw. Also, desaturating to create a black and white is about the worst way of doing it. Black and white is as much an art as colour. Its a combination of altering various colour channels to create a look.
