Possible Puppy Dawg on the Cards! YAY!
Hello hello!
I am FAR too excited at the moment! Picky and I have been discussing a while whether or not to get a puppy daaawg! After much thought and consideration and looking into finances and things we're pretty much 100% certain we can have one and give it a superb home! Looked at a litter this morning of Border Collie Labrador cross... and they were GORGEOUS! We have one on "reserve" at the moment and well... YAY! If we do get it, we should have it within a week so need to get all the equipment to be prepared! EXCITING! The only qualm we have at the moment is how long you can leave a puppy at home alone. According to a number of internet webbys it's normally 1 hour plus an hour per how many months old they are (so 1 month old would mean 2 hours, 2 month old 3 hours etc). Obviously it all depends on the puppy dawg but what do you people think? Work wise I can wangle shifts which would mean she would be alone for only an hour or two tops (that would start in 2 weeks time). Up until then, we're both around 24/7 to help her settle in! She's 5 and a bit weeks now... so by the time work comes about she'll be nearing 8 weeks! I'm very excited! I miss not having a dog about in the house and know it's going to be super hard work training and things... but we've thought it through and through and it just seems right! YAAAAAAAY! Will post piccies when we get them! *bounces off* |

Aww I love doggys
Mics mother got a Golden Retriever puppy as a retirement gift from her boss. He is 6-7 months old can can't be left alone for an hour let alone longer before he starts destroying the place...well...destroying it more then he already has. |

I'm so excited! She's GORGEOUS! Completely black other than a wee white spot on her back right paw and a little white tuft on her chest, short haired, playful but slightly timid too (a couple of the other dogs were mental and grappling with Pickys shoe laces and coat whilst the others were a bit too scared to come play... figured she was the perfect inbetween!) and and and and
Well she's a stunner. The Mother was so gorgeous too - working dog, very small collie but snuggly and loving too! She didn't stay too long with us and the pups though as the pups were doing their best to suckle and I think the teeth are starting to get to her! She did give me a welcoming snog though which was nice! The Father is a working labrador from a farm down! They were both nawty and got jiggy when both the owners weren't looking! He's short haired, nice temperament apparently and has lots of grand children to play with! We didn't get to see him which is sad but I'm pretty sure the lady farmer was very trustable! EEEEE! Am excited! Must disappear though as have work now - going to be bouncing around with excitement me! |

Awww I'd love a doggy.
Ideally they shouldn't be left at all especially when they are a puppy but I've always been able to leave mine for long periods.

Would 2 hours be considered too long though (at 8 - 10 weeks old)?

With our family dog, we left her for four when she was a puppy. She totally wracked the kitchen. We had to buy a new carpet, she pulled things out of the cupboards and ate them - and I mean shoes and washing powder.
We ended up making a pen for her unser the stairs. She was fine in there and got used to knowing when we were going out, and would sit in it. She knew it was her space. Sounds a little cruel to keep them penned up but it wasn't for hours on end, and much more beneficial so she didn't eat the house!!! If you can have some kind of area for the dog, then I wouldn't say 2 hours was long. I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving one to roam the house for that long. Also be prepared that a puupy can't and wont hold wees and poos for that long so be prepared to clean up when you get back. I had a dog that was never house trained, and you can buy these big 'nappies' that sit on the floor. They have stuff in them so that your dog knows to go on it, and it's generally nicer than cleaning it straight off the floor. They are called puppy training pads or something, Pets at Home sell them.

If you leave it too long you'll know it as soon as you get home With all our dogs we simply tried and tested it all, that way we knew how long they could all be left for individually rather than a set time. I would recommend taking it to doggy training classes though, it'll give you more control and really does make a difference from my experience.
YAY for a puppy though Look forward to pics!

I can't recommend getting the new pupster a pen highly enough! It makes house training super easy, it'll save your house and it'll give puppy somewhere safe and secure to be when you aren't there. Feed in it etc when they are tiny and it becomes their 'safe place'. Hamish used to settle immediatley he was put in there after a very short period of time
