Whoever said i needed more RAM was obviously right!

Threw 2gb in the expansion bay and changed 1gb in 2.5gb and it's currently flying! Very impressed so far, best memory upgrade i've ever done, i've never noticed such a leap in performance in the past! I've got another 2gb to replace the other 512 but that's a nightmare because its not "user accessible". So for now 2.5gb is keeping me happy until i whip out ye olde screwdriver!

Yep, made a massive difference when I did it too. I think I'm at my max of 2gig though now.

Vista absolutely needs 2GB. Indeed the new laptop I have was specced with 4GB from the start (though it's come with Vista x32 which is slightly annoying).

One of the DIMM slots on this laptop (Dell D830) is under the keyboard. It's not hard to get at though. I can't remember what model you got in the end.

I new 2gb would always be much more responsive, but i can't believe how wrong they have it with 1gb! Most people run 1gb? I thought i could "get by" until i upgraded, most of the time i was pulling my hair out...

I have the M1210, it's not a major operation, but its still a pain in the ass...

I also only have x32 Vista, so i won't see all the RAM, but tbh its not a worry, it was a cheap as buying 3gb! I may lookin into x64 but i can only envisage problems (i know its much better than it used to be but i'm past caring farting around with computers lately i just want the damn thing to work!).

I need to reformat this anyway, i'm thinking of x32 for total compatibility (just incase), and a nice x64 unbuntu install for my general day to day OS, but for ubuntu i still need to find some replacement apps so i'm not so sure yet. Either way most of my degree course is taught under fedora and all the computers in the lab run it, and its so annoying when i don't know how to do a few simple things with a linux install! So i need to get my ass in gear and end up like Daz/Garp/Etc... (help...).

But... I need a music dukebox/player that syncs to my iPod (5g) and scrobbles to last.fm (preferrably like iTunes because it does a pretty good job of handling my music on the pod). And i need to connect to my uni VPN but they provide the (windows only - irony++?) cisco client, i tried manually setting it up but it wasn't having any from windows even when i found another ipsec client. They are probably my two main "problem" areas i think...

Oh and i'm talking to you with 3232mb of memory now, and i can't believe how fast this thing actually flies, i've not even been flexing it...!

whats the max vista business can take? mine could do with another boost i think. cpu still plods on but vista is still fat so i'm sure it'd appreciate extra space to engulf

currently running 4x512 but seen some good deals on 2x1gb kits recently.

Vista Business x32 - 4GB minus graphics card memory and overheads.
Vista Business x64 - 4GB

And I've already had Ubuntu running on this laptop (it's how I did the disk dump).

Amarok is a KDE app that I hearted muchly but I dont know how it handles the ipod, not having one. Sure it'll work with lastfm though. There's probably something in gnome too.

With regard the VPN, there's a linux version of the cisco client (vpnc) that works fine, I use it all the time

I was thinking gnome, becauase its always the default, but i do like KDE better. How would you rate the awful start to KDE 4.0 so far? Not worth the hassle for someone like myself?
