help!
i'm in the flat - but can't get any further than the hall / bedroom
our internal door which leads to the living room and bedroom has had a faulty lock since we moved in, but it has now finally given up the ghost it won't even consider opening maintenance aren't answering the phone, the letting agent has said that if we screw the door handle off we're causing willful damage to the property and will lose our deposit (£800) BUT the rabbits are in the living room - i can't get to them, i can't even see/hear them and i'm going out of my mind! what could / should i do? *cries* |

Does the door open outwards or inwards? I don't suppose kicking it or forcing it open will work?

I'd be taking the handle off and having a look. Bollocks to the letting agent.

Handle off, lock out, open door, replace handle, snuggle rabbits.

eurgh, jasper has instructions from his dad on how to disassemble the lock, he'll be home in an hour, so if maintenance haven't called back - we'll be breaking into the lounge.
the lettings company are so blasé about really not giving a crap - they've said that there is nothing they can do if the maintenance won't call us, that we WILL lose £800 if we take off the lock ourselves. words fail me - living here makes me SO unhappy. (this is one of a very VERY long line of problems we've had) i swear, if anything has happened to these rabbits, even if they look a bit too hungry - heads are going to roll. kitten - they REALLY don't care, my car keys are in there, the kitchen is the othersid of the door, my wallet is in their - so i can't cook, i don't have any money to go out and buy food - our pets are in there and they still do NOTHING will - i can't kick it, i've tried barging into it but it does nothing. the door opens away from the side i'm stuck - the hinge side is in the living room belmit - i hope that works - i'm trusting jasper and a screwdriver to get me out of this mess! i agree bollocks to the letting agent - but saying goodbye to £800 is a little harder! i am so cross / upset i think i am going to explode Last edited by goldilocks; 01-05-2008 at 18:01. |

Peculiar. I'd go with Belmit, I've done it to a couple of the locks in my flat. Told the letting agency afterwards, gave them a copy of the new keys.

How will they know that you've had the handle off?

when i say 'barging' - this door hasn't opened easily for about 6 months - it needs a hard shoulder nudge to get it open, even when it's opening.

Re the handles, depends how old the place is. If it's as old as mine the handles don't stay on once you've taken them off. I've been through this problem and had to fetch the superglue. :/
