It is one of the major reasons there are many Producer owned record labels. Dr Dre - Aftermath, works with Universal records etc. There is less people and more money to be split between people who are involved. I have worked with a few people who are apparently in the business and when I see them they don't look too happy and the life portrayed of that of an artist on tv is not what it looks like.

I remember watching something about TLC ages ago, and how they had to file for bankruptcy, noone could understand why one of the biggest girl groups at the time had no money.

That puts things into perspective

I have no mercy for them. Most of them do nothing buy things they dont really need and in very excessive amounts. For example, why have a massive mansion with massive garden [I'm talking 2 football-pitch sized garden] When a three bedroom house and a moderate garden will do? You just have to watch MTV cribs to see how stupid imo these artist are.

Like I said, it was ages ago

I do remember one Cribs though, dont recall his name, but he was boasting about the fact his bedroom alone cost 3.5m because it was all gold plated or something :/

3.5 for a bedroom, I hope the mattress is stuffed with dodo feathers too.

I suppose the best bet will be for an Artist to have the right to everything and just employ the label to market their music in the best possible way. That is the way most artist are going.

I listen to a damon dash - hiphop producer *guru. He said one have to go on multiple platinum to actually reap the reward of the industry. I suppose the link in the OP supports this.

*I disagree he is a guru lol

Most of the homes on MTV cribs are owned by the movie/music people.

Before you point the finger at the man, consider this...

Steve Albini and Dick Dale don't like record companies, but they're not giving away their work for free - are they?

Jonathan Coulton doesn't like record companies particularly, is giving away his music free whilst also selling it, releases it under a Creative Commons license so people can cover it without charge (as long as they credit him), and yet he is still making a living as a professional musician based on it. The big difference is he's employing companies to do what the labels normally provide, e.g. marketing, CD manufacturing, recording and mastering, merchandise, tour management and so on. He isn't actively involved in the areas, that's why he pays them for, so in essence he's not all that much different from any other artist signed up to a label, he just happens to be at the top of the chain instead of the bottom. All parties concerned profit nicely from it with no corporate shafting taking place.
