why do people do this?

Ditto. Although annoyingly by body clock seems to have developed an internal alarm and even on days off it is very rare that I sleep past 9am even if I've been out the night before

Try getting up at the time Lostkat and I do every day, only then can you complain. Then again even at weekends I'm up before 8... such a waste of the day otherwise - got plenty of time to sleep when I'm dead.

I've been getting up at silly o clock recently, Yesterday I woke at 5.15am

Today was 7.45am which is a lay in for me.

Usually up just after 6am for work, have a lie in at the weekends and get up about half seven

Always up between 7-7:20am on a weekday, and whatever time Lynnie wakes me on the weekend

Never feel like sleeping in is wasting the day, as I always find that the later I get up, the later I stay up till, so I still have the same amount of time to get stuff done. Will always get up pretty early though if we want to go into town on a Saturday, as we detest crowds in town so we'd rather go when it's quiet.
