Default I spotted this huge thing on the way home.....

Not worthy of the photograhy section and really more of an OOoooooOo aren't huge things amazing! post anyway.

I was driving home and spotted this (not hard to miss), the Saipem 7000

It is the second largest crane vessel in the world. It's hard to get a sense of scale from the photo but trust me it's Huuuugggeee! (accommodation designed for 800 people contains 30 triple cabins, 335 double cabins, 35 singles and 5 suites and also contains a large galley and mess rooms, a hospital, cinema and lounges.) Seeing things like that just makes you think wow. Unfortunately the weather is just dreich today so it's not a great shot. However if the weather improves and it's still nearby I'll get another shot. I'm hoping there will be a nice clear evening sometime at the weekend and it'll still be about so I can get a few shots of it all lit up.

Any idea why its appeared in your neck of the woods, or has it always been there, and you've just decided to tell us about it?

Fricking massive all the same!

Blimey

The rig I'm on is a reasonable size - far from being the biggest in the world but far from being the smallest and you could fit ten of these on there

It's primary purpose is lifting integrated platform decks etc for oil production platforms. Having the capacity to lift these in one go allows the units to be built completely onshore and commissioned before sending out to the platform. Without this capacity, the decks need to be built in sections, shipped out, bolted together and commissioned offshore which is considerably more expensive and time consuming.
