with a year left on my contract with O2 I have just seen that they are £500 sim-free from apple.

If I cut my sim to fit, would it activate on the new phone ok? seems like it'd probably work out cheaper :/

AFAIK there's no educational discount on the iPhones or iPads.

Apple has announced that an unlocked, contractless iPhone4 will be available in the UK. If you can pony up the cash up-front it'll almost certainly be more cost effective than a subsidised contract one.

It's been on their store for the past few hours. £499 for the 16GB, £599 for the 32GB. I've just registered with O2 to get a micro-SIM sent to me; you can swap your current iPhone SIM with the one they send, then snap the micro-SIM out of the full-size surround when you get an iPhone 4.

Nice that the contractless version is now unlocked. The 3GS was still SIM-locked to O2. I can have mine unlocked in Sept (although it already is ).

Colleague at work has been fighting the Apple store all afternoon to order one (with eventual success). I've gone off the idea again myself (I'd certainly welcome the extra storage but there isn't much else that I'm bothered about right now - besides what I'll get for free with iOS 4).

Or you could just go here and do it now. My 3GS has been unlocked officially since November 2009.

Hmm, £499? take away the £240 for recycling my 3GS and £80 for my G1... I may just get this on PAYG and simplicity tariff Will work out sooo much cheaper!
