Default Xbox 360 Live through Cable TV Box

Is this possible?
My telewest TV box has an ethernet cable on the back. I've plugged a cable from the box to the xbox and its not worked. I've entered my broadband username and password into the xbox settings, but haven't entered a service name.

Has anyone achieved this, or is it impossible?
my telewest box is an Explorer 4200 DVB

Don't see why it should be impossible. They're just ethernet ports after all. Have you done all the usual checks to ensure the ethernet port on the modem is working?

Apparently cant have the cable modem and the set-top box as a modem on at the same time. Otherwise, it works in theory... I'll stick with using my laptop as a gateway to the wireless network for now

Ah yes, I didn't realise you were trying to do that. Only one modem at a time - applies to any line that - cable, ADSL, analogue.

Solution: one cheap (cable compatible) router. See related thread by Lostkat for suggestions.

Could move it downstairs, but the set-top box is only capable of 1MB speeds so I've heard

Not really too familiar with cable setups tbh but...
Can you not use an Xbox360 wireless adapter?
I have a spare Wireless access point if you want it?

The 360 wireless adapter is pretty expensive (£60 or so IIRC). I'm using one because I got it as a freebie but I was going to use an old AP setup as a bridge and then run a crossover cable to the 360.

Thats good of you mate, but we have a wireless network already . £60 is steep for the wireless adapter, so as I said, I think I'll stick with an ethernet to my laptop, then wireless connection from laptop to the router upstairs.

No what I meant was can you use the Access point and plug an Ethernet cable from that into the Xbox? This giving your Xbox wireless?
If so, you can have it. I think I have a crossover cable as well.
