Default 2Gb memory for my PC?

I'm running a Shuttle SN41G from a couple of years ago, 32bit, PCI and AGP with 1Gb of OCZ PC3200 Dual Channel silly expensive matched memory.

I want to increase the memory to 2Gb.

Looking at the current prices, if I want the same memory, it's going to cost me the best part of £200. I can't afford this.

The CPU in the box is an AMD XP-3200+, not overclocked at all and I think I'm running the memory at stock timings.

If I were to spend £75 on this should I expect it to work OK in my box?

From my source of all knowledge - crucial.com (note - they don't list SN41G, so I went for the closest option)

Manufacturer Specifications - Shuttle SN41G2

Number of Slots: Slot 1 Slot 2

Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700,DDR PC3200,DDR PC4000 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*

*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.

* Maximum Memory: 2048MB
* Standard Memory: None
* Slots: 2 (2 banks of 1)
* Graphics Support: AGP 8X
* USB Support: 2.x Compliant

Q: What memory goes into my computer, and can I mix speeds?

A: DDR memory with support for DDR PC2700,DDR PC3200,DDR PC4000 speeds.

Because DDR memory is backward-compatible, you can safely upgrade your system with any of the guaranteed-compatible DDR speeds listed below, even if your manual calls for PC1600 or PC2100 speeds.

Q: How much memory can my computer handle?

A: 2048MB.

Adding the maximum amount of memory will improve performance and help extend the useful life of your system as you run increasingly demanding software applications in the future.

Q: Do I have to install matching pairs?

A: No.

No, you can install modules one at a time, and you can mix different densities of modules in your computer. But if your computer supports dual-channel memory configurations, you should install in identical pairs (preferably in kits) for optimal performance.

Q: Does my computer support dual-channel memory?

A: No.

Your system does not support dual channel.

Q: Does my computer support ECC memory?

A: No.

Your system does not support ECC. Because ECC and non-ECC modules should not be mixed within a system, install the same type of modules that are already in your system.

In other words, yes it should work. CAS timing is a bit low compared to what you've got now, so it'll run a little slower, but in all honesty, you'll probably not notice.

That would work fine in your box

Any 3200 will be good imo as if it needs to run slower it'll just automatically run at a slow speed

Looks good to me buddy.

If you sell off the OCZ stuff, you should get at least the cost of the new stuff back too.

One thing. Have you noticed that that RAM is from the States and will probably be liable to a hefty import tax?

$70 = roughly £35, shouldn't even get sniffed at by Customs, and I'm waiting to see if they mark it at a lower value to help speed things through.

I may well reuse the other stuff on a different PC, I think I have another that takes the same memory.

Hello,

When I send the ram, I do not use customs papers and I do not declare the value of the item, so there are usually no taxes or fees charged.

Thanks,

Works for me.

Wish I needed some RAM - that's very cheap. I've bookmark the company's E-bay shop. Good find, Feek.

It doesn't work. I don't know if it's not compatible with the system or whether the memory is faulty but the shuttle doesn't even POST.

I've got two shuttles here, SN41 and SN45 (mine is the 45, I got the numbers mixed earlier) and neither system POSTs.

I have an older box which takes the same type, but it sees each strip as 512Mb so I suspect it's a compatibility problem with the shuttles.. Annoying as the one the kids use also has Samsung memory in it and it's fine.

*aaaaarrrrrggggghhhhhhhh*
