Not really had any issues around here with either O2 or Orange in the past but that's only on 2G. Have no experience whatosever of 3G coverage and no way to check really.

Can anyone recommend a barcode scanner/price check app. There's a few in the App Store but the reviews are rather varied.

I use RedLaser. I can't compare it to any others but it does the job pretty well.

RedLaser was the one I was looking at, and the one where I saw the comments about fake reviews and the current version of the app being broken. That review itself could have been malicious, of course.

How does red laser work? How do you scan a barcode?

iPhone takes a photo of the barcode.

Doesn't even take a photo... it loads up the camera, you point it at the barcode, it recognises it and translates it into numbers, then just gets cheapest prices from Google Shopping/etc
