Previously it's been slightly depressing for certain single folk, but its mostly been internalised. Now instead of just putting up and dealing with it, it seems like almost everyone and their mother has been facebooking and tweeting, and posting about it everywhere, wallowing in the self-inflicted misery. It's not healthy, if anything I'd expect it makes it worse. Don't define yourselves by your relationships. You're a strong, and wonderful person. You don't need a Valentine to affirm that. Revel in it and celebrate it instead.

*swoon* ^^
Exemactly. I don't and never did have a Dad but I don't go all maudlin/psycho on people who are taking their pappys out for Lunch on Fathers Day. I just let them have it - it's a day that makes them happy & me sad but I wouldn't try to rain on their day. I used to apend it with my little family & be happy for what i had. It's just a day. And FYI, I think not having a Dad and having to sit through year after year of Fathers Day is a little worse than being single on Valentines Day (except in some cases) because there's a Market for you & you're unlikely to *always* be the one who's not involved year after year after year. I just wanted a bit if fun this year after all the **** we've had (you know, death, illness etc) & to do something we don't usually do. But the shine was well & truly gone by 7.15am thanks to some who just can't let other people enjoy stuff that THEY think is a waste of time, telling me that essentially, whatever (small & thoughtful) gift I'm buying or making (and receiving) is 'tacky' and that I must must a special day to tell my other half that I love him. Seriously? Feck off. "Hey! You're entitled to my opinion & I'll make sure you get it!"

I think its just made worse by the curse of Facebook.
Like you said everyone is entitled to their opinion, but its certainly hit a nerve for some people recently. BB x |

I think it's less what is said Mei & more the manner in which it's said. Some are just downright nasty about it & seem to belittle anyone who wants to get involved because they're gullible idiots. I think it's that which gets backs up (certainly is with me) than people saying they wish it'd bugger off.
Totally different I think because just someone saying 'Grr I hate Valentine's Day' wouldn't bother me at all but 'you idiots getting sucked into it' would. Cos it's RUDE and judgemental. I think with Fb & twitter/blogs etc, people have a platform to impose their views in everyone else and tell you what to think - it's very easy to hurt a lot of people with a few badly chosen or badly delivered words.

I was agreeing with you x have edited to clarify.
Everyone has an opinion but FB and twitter have made it a lot easier for people to say stuff w/o thinking of how it affects individual people. I think. It is hard to not have someone on Valentines, i think everyone has been there. Anyway. I love you lot so Happy VD from me

I'm afraid that despite being very definitely single I'm more with the loved up cats above. Valentine's Day doesn't bother me much either way (or at least not any more than any other special day where marketing starts 3 months prior), it only affects you if you let it. I try not to define myself by my relationship status or lack therein so it isn't something that I feel much affected by - that said I'd be more than happy to be in a relationship but I'm not inclined to try and get into a relationship if it's just so I've got someone to cuddle up to on Valentine's Day.
This is way off it being irrational but so is much of the thread.
