Can't wait for this myself either. Like you though I'm a bit meh about being able to discard your pistol, it's what I liked about Gears that you could only have so many weapons. It's daft for you to just be able to whip out one of twenty weapons you are "apparently" carrying.

I was considering that, I like sniping and I'm generally quite good at it. It'll probably take a few plays to determine what weapon I'll be the least useless with

I know what you mean. I'm probably going to stick with the MP5. I think it's a team of 3 not 4, though not entirely sure.
