It makes sense to give the core some use - any use. I mean, what can you do with a core now straight out of the box? Play DVD's :/

Well, the list has been given some credibility with some leaks of clan guide information:

I would love it if there was support for it. Although I'm not sure if it plays mkv files which the majority of HDTV movies appear to be in. I need to try that. Actually, I think my 360 is louder than my HTPC so now I think about it I wouldn't dump it.

It doesn't play mkv's unfortunately. The last dash added some limited MPEG-4 support but it didn't seem very comprehensive. Your only choice for streaming HD to the 360 at the moment is WMV.
