Then get saving, you wont regret it

The cheapest time we found to fly was end of Jan, but its also the coldest. We are setting a daily budget of £100 each, that includes all food, souveniers and tours etc, works out about right

I went to NYC in January 2002 for a Graphic Design trip which due to world events turned into a very memorable week that I don't think could be experienced now.

The terrorist attacks on WTC didn't drastically alter my desired itinery with the exception of a set of rooftop panoramics which didn't get taken from Towers 1 & 2, and such distinct landmarks were also missing from my Empire State Pana.

The ground zero site was a strange and emotional experience - unpleasant, yet fulfilling to visit. Charred building fronts surrounding the site, contrasting the stark & vivid colours of memorial flags, banners and tied up dedications to those lost.

The wind beaten flags and banners flashed such vibrancy and were matched with vast crowds drawn to the sheer enormity of what had happened at this site. From a distance, it took on an almost carnival appearance, and yet standing near the chain link fence still plastered in desperate appeals to the whereabouts of missing loved ones some 4 months on, what hit me most was the near-silent atmosphere.

The rest of new york was a constant cascade of footfalls, car horns, transport noise and general 'bustle', yet this vast and now derelict square was in it's own little bubble.

I loved visiting new york - I was lucky enough to visit the Guggenheim when an installation piece by Matthew Bourne was exhibiting, I tried my best to get around the 'main sections of the Met' without getting lost or hungry, the MoMA helped me to realise that dropping Art in pursuit of Graphics was the right choice and most of all... the FOOD IS JUST HUGE!!!!!!!!

Never before have I been presented with so much food for $1.90 at breakfast time, well, actually any time of day!

I would very much like to return one day for another week or so of 'touristy stuff' - seeing the sites, experiencing the enormity of the city and undertaking some of the activities you have listed Dee - a helicopter trip would be amazing!

I really look forward to seeing your photography efforts following your trip - I hope you both have a wicked time
