If its any consolation Matt, I am still alive and I've celebrated my tenth diabetic anniversary. It sometimes makes you grumpy when you haven't had any food and can have weird and funny effects. It is a serious condition, but you can easily live with it.
Dietwise, its better to avoid all fat, life wise, its better not to panic and think "OMG I have a life threatening condition" thats not to say it isn't serious, but don't sit there in a fit of depression. Im probably teaching a granny to suck eggs, because if I know you, you have researched it til you know enough to become a leading expert in the field. It will take time to sink in, but don't panic. You will have to make some sacrifices (I miss candyfloss and huge bars of galaxy) but there will come a time when you will have adjusted to it and it will become second nature. For further reading on foods, research GI (Glycemic Index). Also, if you need to chat, you can find me lurking in various shady places these days.

Oops, I didn't make it clear enough
I meant that it's typical that he gets a week off work and has to spend it researching how to change his lifestyle instead of having some fun.

I have done quite a lot of research already and I'm starting to realise the implications and also how I can deal with it. I met the nurse today when I went back for more blood tests and she is really nice and helpful. I told her what I plan to do (eat low GI, go back to the gym and do short cardio and lifting again) and she agreed that it sounded good. She said she would prefer me to work on cardio fitness rather than muscle mass but in the end its whatever works for me In some ways its a blessing rather than a curse, I'll have to stay on the straight and narrow this time or my health is at risk so I won't be able to let things slide. Good Matt, you sound like you're getting a grip already. Shed the weight mate, it'll do you more favours and the type 2 may even go away. Give your pancreas a rest for a bit and function can regularly go back to normal with type 2. Get your hands on a blood sugar testing meter and keep an eye that way, it's really easy to do and you'll see for yourself what certain foods do to your blood sugar.

I am glad they figured out what is going on, and it's great that you can take steps to fix it! I hope the adjustment isn't too hard on you:-)
