Hah, I do this but it's partly a hangover from when I lived in Edinburgh as the numbers there went from 031 to 0131 so naturally I think of the area code as being 4 digits. In fact it still is to a certain extent with London, one big segment is under 0207 and the other is 0208.

Oddly though in some places the area code is considered to be five digits long e.g. Dundee where it's 01382 and that seems to be common in the Fife and Tayside areas.

//edit Briggykins you'd probably hate me saying numbers on a phone, I sometimes switch between "zero" and "oh" in the same sequence. For some reason zero is usually for the first digit and oh for the rest.

I have to dial a 9 to get an outside line, and then the number at work, so some codes are techincally 6 digits

When I give someone a number and start "020" and they automatically respond "0207"...

I always believed the code for London is either 0208 or 0207 - so I'd always write the number down in segments like 0208 123 1234

It used to be 01, then 081, then 0181, then 0208

Well at least that's what I was told by a director at BT (for the 0181 and 081 standard) - which doesn't make it correct (it is BT after all!!), but I'm easily swayed
