I have the Akasa one, and it's designed for use on a desk. Fine for that, but a thoroughly bad idea for use on the lap. I'd say the same for the other one as well.
The Port one I suggested is designed for on-lap use (I have one too, though I've had little use for it). It may look fugly, but it's made for the job. The bit that sticks out for the mouse folds in if you don't want it (though that does remove some of the cooling benefit). Fair comment about the plastic/beanbag ones. You could have a heat issue there. |

Not much. It's more non-slip than padded. At least it's smooth, unlike the underside of the average laptop. As mentioned above, padding can act as a heat trap (but then so can your legs).
