They do shift. I haven't dared overclock mine, but I know I could if I were brave enough.

I'll be getting a whole new rig soon, with an E6600 as the CPU. If they overclock as well as Stan's then I'll be happy

I got the E6600 to the same speed on that board so not as high percentage of an overclock as the E6300 but still faster due to having double the L2 cache. Cooling was with a Scythe Ninja - a bit big for some cases but the Arctic freezer 7 is just as good and much smaller.
Edit: If memory serves me, I'm pretty sure it did 3GHz on stock volts and only needed a slight bump to get to 3.15.

That's happened quicker than expected, both mobo and drive have been ordered. I'm not going to raid the drives though, I'll build the OS for the new mobo onto the new drive and then add the existing drive as a second one for me to get data from and give me uber storage

Didn't notice this thread before otherwise I would have passed on my limited knowledge. That is one of the older DS3s, the newer DS3P supports Crossfire and IE1394(firewire) plus a couple of other more minor features (so basically the same as the old DS4). It is still a very decent motherboard, just superceded now by the DS3P which itself has been superceded by the P35 based DS3R and DS3P (first of the P35 based motherboards supports both DDR2 and DDR3, for whenever that becomes useful).
Hope this system works better for you anyway, I've always found Asus motherboards to be very solid but maybe you were just unlucky.

Thanks Semi..
No, I wasn't unlucky with the P5N-E SLI. It's a crap motherboard with many problems that a lot of people have found. Asus really made a pup with that one. It was pretty much a brand new board when I bought it, this time I'd rather get a slightly older board which is tried and tested.

The board which was supplied was the Rev 3.3 and I've flashed the BIOS with the F12 version.
However I notice now that it's running with a x6 multiplier rather than x9 and is therefore at 1.6GHz instead of the more expected 2.4GHz. I think I've got the BIOS settings all set to Auto so I'm going to have to find the appropriate bit and reconfigure.

The problem of the CPU slowing down was a setting in the BIOS called CPU ENHANCED HALT (C1E), once I disabled that then it ran at full speed.
However, it's quite a fancy setting as further testing has shown. When the system is idle, it drops the multiplier to x6, therefore slowing the system down. It drops vcore, so uses less power and generates less heat. Once the PC starts doing anything, the voltage and multiplier both go back up again to full whack. I've turned it back on, I see no reason not to take advantage of not thrashing the CPU when I don't need to and if I notice any performance glitches it's a simple BIOS change to disable it again. It's been a fun day but all appears well so far I've also proven a fault in one of my memory strips and that's being RMAd back to the manufacturer.

Handy.
If at some point in the future you want to overclock, you'll have to turn that feature off.

Sounds like ASUS Cool & Quiet. I don't trust any of these progs & run them All manually. Glad your new build is working out well though. |
