Would you stop? - Page 2

I stop just about every time I see someone with that well known dejected look standing around a stopped vehicle.

Once was a family on vacation and their truck had blown a freeze plug. I managed to tow them (and the in-bed camper, and the 22 foot boat on the trailer) to the nearest station so they could get it fixed. This was in my little 1.8L 4 cylinder Chevy Luv, btw.

Another time I stopped and it was a family moving from Louisiana to this area after Katrina. Their rear tyre had blown out, so they put the spare on. Made it to within 5 miles of a repair shop when the spare blew out too. Loaded the family (and the dog) in my little Toyota Tercel and got them to their friend's house and he took it from there.

I've also stopped on numerous occasions to help people that were stuck due to inclement weather. Last winter I towed a poor girl out of the ditch after she'd done a lazy 360 on the black ice after coming across the train tracks. She was a pretty little thing, but alas I'm married.....

Mind you, I do have the added advantage of military security training to review a situation before getting into it. If I have the slightest odd feeling in my gut, I stop and ask if there's anyone I can call for them. But I won't get out of my car in those cases.

Personally, I wouldn't want some stranger to stop. It would most likely freak me out more than the fact I'd broken down on a motorway.
I have breakdown cover and a mobile phone, I would much prefer to wait by myself than have some stranger approach me, it would make me feel a hell of a lot more vulnerable, when I'd already be feeling extremely concerned.

I was going to say the exact same thing!

Once had a blow out on a very dark stretch of the M56 at night. Would have crapped myself if a man had stopped! The motorway patrol man was lovely though.

Exactly my sentiments.

Maybe if someone was flagging people down and really looked distressed... but it would have to be an extreme situation.

I wouldn't know what the hell to do. "Hi. Broken down eh? Well, cya." Unless of course they'd stopped to fix their Mac. Then I could help.

Even though I don't drive, after having someone's car attempt anal sex with me last night I'm even more sure what my answer would be now, and that would be no.

You don't have to watch many 'Cop' shows to see what happens when someone pulls over and a driver who is either trying to be clever, or not paying attention, ploughs into the back at Warp 9. It's not pretty.

I wouldn't on a motorway but have done on smaller roads loooooaads.

As for people stopping for me... I would be grateful if it was to help me move the car into a safe position (if, once again, on a smaller road) but would most probably turn down any other help, as like everyone else here, I'm covered by AA so would wait for an emergency vehicle.

Yep, I wouldn't stop unless something was wrong and they obviously needed immediate help from someone/anyone.

Pulling to a harsh halt on the hard shoulder can be dangerous and the person who's broken down won't know who the hell I am. They'll be waiting for a breakdown van, not some young lad screeching to a halt in a Fiesta and then running towards them with a heat blanket and a mug of hot chocolate screaming "I are helps you!!!"

I don't know if I would, I expect not.

A friend of mine definately won't stop again. He pulled over to help a woman change a tyre last year and the thanks he got for it was she went to the police and said he tried to rape her. Had there not been CCTV then I hate to think where he'd be now.
