Heh was just watching the Simpsons and it was the one where they introduce school uniform. Made me think of today.
Again, I agree that some college kids look horrendous but generally the finance school is all adults who just wear their comfy clothes. No hoodies in my group anyway!

At work, my junior managers have to wear company uniform. Senior managers obviously get to wear suits. It's about image and looking professional.
Obviously at educational level it's a bit different, however I'd like to have smart students if I were the Dean of a uni... but I know they are entitled to express themselves the way they want, but I guess it depends on whether or not that rule was in place before the students joined that place. If it's a new rule and they hadn't been consulted (the students) then it is a bit unfair. I guess they are trying to reflect a more professional image? Is it that bad?

It is just the finance school, which is in a new location this year, the rest of the college is still casual. No one was consulted, not even the tutors who were also casual last year and now have to wear business dress.
It is kind of bad because (it's a bit embarrasing) I don't have much money and I'm losing a lot of weight so I really don't have that many clothes to wear for work. A four day week of workwear would help a lot, and also I would be walking further in my work shoes and just little things like that. I choose to dress smart for work, I have worked for companies where suits are mandatory, and I have complied with the dress code as they were my employers and I was a representative of their company. But I am paying college for their services, how can they dictate to me what to wear? Anyway I learn better in jeans

In that case I totally support your decision. It does seem a bit unfair. Especially if people don't own the suitable clothing - they can't force people to buy new clothes. The training courses I've been to have all been casual - as you say you learn better when the atmosphere is less formal.
Hope the appeal works out!

i think i'd mention that, in work you're paid a monitary amount to be there and you understand that some of this will need to go back into clothing, but for college you are paying them and ontop of that need to pay further for clothing to wear which will have no benefit on the education you recieve.

You could point out to them that in the world of finance (i.e. in hedge funds and investment banks) the real money-makers (i.e. the traders and quants) don't wear suits, but go casual. They'd probably think that you're being a bit of a smart-ass, though.

Resurrect-a-thread....
Now I work here, I have to go around shouting 'WHY ARE YOU WEARING TRAINERS?!!' to the students. Most of them adhere to it, but a few have received written warnings for not adhering to the dress code :O Still think they should wear what they want though, and the main college site does this, for both staff and students.
