MS handholding, it's gotten worse for the end user. Luckily it's pretty much all off in server 2008 (well, no worse than 2003 anyway), else there would have been some p****d off techies moaning at Redmond.
Anyway, I sorted it last night in the end, 2's night's a charm it seems. I think an update must have borked it, can't think of much else that would cause it to break for no reason.

I just turned that off so it stopped asking me. Of couse, it asked me if I was sure I wanted to turn it off, and I'm sure when I said yes I heard a little scream from within the laptop, but all is much better now I'm not being asked for confirmation every time I want to do something

In a way I quite like it - since it's not often I launch programs that require confirmation anyway.

Can UAC be totally disabled to WinXP standards?

If you stick with it you might find you can live with it. I have, and I can. While not as food as they way Linux/Unix implements what they're getting at, it's better than before, and it is a decent line of defence.
Once you've stopped messing around so much you dont see it a lot ime. Though I did see it a fair bit last night of course [edit]kk - Yes

I see it maybe once a day, unless I'm doing software installation testing and in that case I've learned 'the method' - run a command prompt as administrator, get one prompt at the start, job done.
I can live with that. |

What is desperately needs is a way to elevate an already open command prompt. It's a right pain for a keyboard monkey that.

Dunno about desperately needing that, but certainly useful. Save from having to enter a command or two to 'catch up' having to open a new command prompt doesn't cause that much bother.
Biggest problem I have with command prompts is that I've got used to Windows programs getting launched and then the command prompt coming straight back - unfortunately that's one of the undesirable side-effects of UAC. |

I'm one of few who actually kinda prefers vista to xp... one of my HDDs is a little unstable which often caused xp to BSOD but not had one in vista - and it rarely crashes...explorer someones needs a restart when theres a lot of USB disk activity...but so far so good tbh.
I am equally lovin it |

Case in point, it's annoying when I cant whack WindowsKey+R, type cmd, and execute ipconfig /release without getting an error. I dont want to have to use my mouse to do that :/ I've found a third party tool which helps to some extent (Elevate), and there are even some other GUI plugins (here), but of course they're not part of a default install, so when I come to type away in my VM's I have to stop and get something elevated rather than just point and squirt.
