This question may actually need its own thread in the pc forum but, in idiot level language, what is RSS feeds? How do they work?

In simple language its a page that provides a list of current articles.

It's done in a specific standardised format so that RSS readers can parse that information and let you know when new articles are mentioned on the feed.

I'm subscribed to about a dozen feeds at the moment. Every 30 minutes my RSS reader fetches the RSS feed off the remote website, checks it against what it had last time, and if it finds new stuff has a pop-up message that tells me what feed and how many new messages there are.

What is a rss reader? where do you get/subscribe/download/whatever one?

I use liferea, but thats for Linux. Can anyone recommend a windows one?
