This is getting all too common now. The section between Ilford and Brentwood seem to attract them.. And Old Harlow (Harlow Mill).. These are really fast sections - no chance of the driver stopping. So much so, the have Samaritan signs by the track.

I had a friend who use to work as a guard and it was part of his job to check if the jumper was dead or alive :/ he now works in an office/control hub thingy so doesn't have to look at that sort of stuff anymore.

This happened to Paul a few weeks ago. He was traveling back home when someone committed suicide by jumping in front of the train he was on.

Yep the buggers seem to pop off at least once a month. Infact I think that more of the phantom delays on our line is caused by this. Isn't another spot around Ingatestone with the level crossing?

Witham seems to be getting "popular" too.
If it was a suicide attempt then I feel really really sorry for the driver. Seriously selfish of the person who got hit. If it was an accident (and I fail to see a way it could be) then I feel sorry for the victim too. |

I can't see how it could be an accident, it wasn't anywhere near the station platform, not like his laptop fell into the track and he went and get it. It was about 300 yards from the next station and it is hedges either side and no level crossing.
I think what saved him is that that stretch of the track is very straight between the 2 station, you can see right down it, and because it is between 2 stations within the same town, it wasn't going that particularly fast and was able to stop to a point where there was no fatality. Then you got to ask the question, if the kid was playing, and the train was clearly seen miles away, and slowing down, why didn't he get away in time? If he tried to commit suicide, that's the wrong place to do it, there are 3 bridges further down that he could've jumped off from suddenly. I am putting it down to some kid playing chicken but lost. |

Someone tried this at Chelmsford in front of the train I was about to get on. Because the train was already stopping the driver managed to slam on the anchors but it still resulted in passengers on the platform in hysterics. This is one rare case where having poor eyesight helps - I didn't see anything but the train and I don't know the outcome. The front of the train looked clean though so I suspect that's a good sign.
