To make a fair comparison we should really compare the Pre to the 1st gen iPhone :/

Why? If they're both out now then surely you compare what's available.

hah I got rather cross at WWDC where Apple showed the number of apps and kinda laughed at the Pre's 18. I wanted to say "well you had a fat 0 when your first phone launched!"

What will you be doing for net usage? Most of the appeal of the iPhone for me would be the anywhere net access - being on the £10 Simplicity package though would kill that, which means it would be very expensive to use the net unless you stumble on open WiFi or use it at home - totally kills the usefulness of a lot of apps like train times etc. too.
It's capped at 98p per day but i've no idea how much data it takes to reach 98p, I can't see a per MB cost yet. If it was very small though, you could easily end up with a £30 bill at the end of the month.

I don't think I would use it whilst out and about an awful lot but it's something I can keep an eye on and change the package if I need to.

For applicable tariffs with data capability: Unless a data or BlackBerry Bolt On is taken, your tariff will include O2 Web Daily under which data will be charged at £2.94 per MB up to a maximum of £0.98 per day (00:00am to 23:59pm).
So, that would be about 300KB to hit the 98p max, which is virtually nothing. For me, not having the net stuff completely defies the point of the iPhone in many regards, without it it's just an iPod that can phone people.

Surely that's prime usage for PAYG? 12 months free internet and then free if you top up £10 a month after that... which is what you'd be doing on that tariff anyway.
