It was still only a cover for making money, however you look at it. Cowell will say whatever fits his view at the time, to justify his decisions (even if it directly contradicts what he said before). Remember, Cowell was Mr Nasty to begin with. Now he's some kind of national hero, so it's all a bit pantomime for people to say 'I've lost respect for him'. He's a businessman, and a very successful one at that. He'll say what he has to say to get the best results, he doesn't care and never really has. Look at the debate and the controversy this has provoked, it's exactly what he wanted. I do believe he loves finding new talent, but this is all a bit old hat now. He needs the ratings to stay high - which is why we have all this judging crap going on. I think if it goes to public vote it should be the public that decide, plain and simple. Anything else is just not on, really.
And Davey....Shane... really?? I bet Robson & Jerome made more than Shane did

Trouble is tho I don't believe the public vote does reflect what the public want. Last night if I'd voted I would probably have gone for Danyl - not because he's my favourite, but because he's been in the bottom two before and is probably vulnerable. That's probably what happened with Lloyd - bottom two last week, so people who sort of like him try to keep him in, even if he's not their favourite. Then someone who is generally considered to be safe although not necessarily the favourite to win, like Lucie, falls into the bottom two even though plenty of people would like to see her in.
That, imo, is why the judges are there and have their vote, to prevent talented performers who are generally liked by the public falling through the cracks. Otherwise we run the risk of ending up with people like Shane or, God forbid, Steve Brookstein.

Just saying that at least originally it was about people who could sing but with the twins staying in it now clearly isn't. I'd bet my mortgage that if this was still the first year of Xfactor, Simon would have kicked the twins out.

Both albums went multi-platinum, 4 top ten singles out of 5 released (including a number one). I would say that was pretty successful, wouldn't you?

It was more the 'most talented' angle I was going for! R&J had the biggest selling single of the 90s..triple platinum selling singles....and not much talent to go with it!
I think generally, it's considered a failure now if you don't make the top spot with every single. It's a shame, but it's how it is - not like the old days when a top 40 placing was enough to make it 'a hit'.

He was easily the best singer in that particular year, he had one hell of a range to his vocals.

True, but he was up against Andy Abraham, Chico, Brenda. (who? The only one anyone really remembers is Chico!)..they weren't going to set the world on fire really, were they? Best of a bad bunch I'd say.

Don't forget Journey South, I quite liked them as well. Andy was very good at what he sung (Nat King Cole style songs) but his problem was that's pretty much the only style he could sing. Chico was funny but there was some (a little) singing talent hiding there, plus I thought the "It's Chico Time" song was hilarious
