Because it has nothing to do with "christ's birthday"?
Because even if religious people did use to celebrate it for that reason, its not that any more its just commercial?

I honestly don't know, and if someone wishes me a "merry christmas" or writes it in a card I won't snap at them or anything and will accept the gesture in which it is said/written/meant. It isn't something I get worked up over; I just prefer the other terms for it.

However as Garp correctly pointed out Xristos is the Greek word for Christ... however I'm sure the majority of the population have no clue about it and use it as an abbreviation.

It does irk me, but that's undoubtedly down to my upbringing.

On a similar note, I don't like when people curse using "Jesus" or "Jesus Christ"... that does irk me too. Though hypocritically I do say "oh God" and "Damn" from time to time which annoys me.

I don't use it as an abreviation, I use xmas because my xmas has nothing to do with Christ. However, I do usually use the word 'christmas' so as not to offend others who do celebrate Christmas.

Now don't take this the wrong way, it's not a dig at you, or meant to wind you up but.... it doesn't really matter what religious beliefs you have, the holiday gets it's name from the mass that is held by the Christian church to celebrate and remember the birth of Christ. I don't work in a bank, but I still have a Bank Holiday. If you object to Christmas because you are not christian, then hey, don't celebrate it (or, alternatively, what's wrong with getting into the spirit of things? I have a lot of Hindu friends that celebrate Christmas with us and they all call it Christmas...).

The second, well, it's not specifically the day on which Christ was born, it's the mass that celebrates the birth of Christ, they're not necessarily the same thing (a bit like the Queens "official" birthday).

And the third, I agree it is hugely commercial, but it's not only the people who hold true to the meaning of "christmas" that feast and give presents. Those who refuse to acknowledge the religious aspect still get caught up in the spending, eating, drinking, giving presents, etc. If only the religious spent at Christmas it wouldn't be half so commercial.

Don't get me wrong, like I said, I 'm not having a go. I'm not religious myself. I don't believe Christ ever existed, or at least as anything other than an influential local preacher perhaps. However, I like giving presents. I like feasting and drinking too much. I quite like singing Carols with friends with a drop of mulled wine. I like sparkly decorations and fairy lights, and I especially like a break from work and if we didn't have a Christian state religion we wouldn't have Christmas at all, so I'm happy to call it Christmas. Hell, I'd call it "Osama Bin Laden" day if I had to, as long as I still get to enjoy it all

/EDIT PS. I'm not saying you MUST call it Christmas. Just that it's called Christmas, so don't get annoyed when poeple call it Christmas
