I'm going for camera trickery too, but it would have to be more than 2mm. Under those conditions, 2mm is very roughly one pixel at 1080p resolution, which no-one broadcasts in.

I'm assuming the same mechanics are at work here, some sort of misdirection. He said at the end of the TV show that he'd tell us how to do it on Friday, so hopefully it's not relying on camera trickery.
That show was on last night - it was brilliant!

It could contain a blank scroll and it's true that it's not tampered with and pure skill of the hand gives him the opportunity to replace the scroll in the box with one in his hand or up his sleeve before it's unravelled. A stagehand could keep the scroll updated and pass it to him just before the box is lowered in a split second his hand is offset. He easily fooled the audience as he seemingly swapped places with the gorilla so swapping a scroll should be easy.

It's painfully simple, but very effective. I didn't realise how he had done it until I realised the stand was slightly offstage, covering the swap.

Looking at that video from youtube I suspect camera trickery because the thing just won't keep still! I'd have shot that camera man for moving around so much

I think the camera movement was to make it harder for people think its split screen. Trying to match it up live might be hard.

However he does it, he's a clever and entertaining bugger.

Apart from the head bobbing. Which now I've noticed it, is a bit annoying.

It's a nervous tick of his. He does it a lot, most of which seems to miss the TV edits.
