Caught 5th gear last night and they were testing a form of air bags for bikers. Essentially you wear a jacket which has inflatable cushions/air bags which inflate if you come off your bike. Currently it takes 0.5 seconds to inflate.
Just wondering what bikers thoughts were on the thing? |

Haven't they been playing around the idea of airbags on the front forks. Sounds a bit odd to me

Never get on the bike without a reasonable amount of clobber on personally. At a minimum its 2 pairs of jeans, leather, boots and gloves.
I'll often wear a pair of hiking boots rather than bike boots, because I tend to do a lot of walking when I get off the bike and they're more comfy for that. But they're also waterproof, hardwearing and have quite a bit of ankle protection built in. I can see one potential drawback of the airbag jacket idea - that you'll bounce rather than slide and so not slow down as quickly, therefore increase the chance of hitting something solid before you stop naturally. Swings and roundabouts ...

my favourite lack-of-correct-gear i ever saw, was a guy who nailed it past me on the motorway (way over 100mph) wearing a pair of shorts and a pair of converse with the laces flapping about by the back wheel. looked safe :/
