I used to use Scan quite a lot a few years back when I was at Uni and despite their daft standard £10 postage charge they normally came out on top. I used to check www.todayonly.co.uk everyday until I realised that they were the main reason for my huge credit card bill

I can only extol the virtues of Scan. For me, they have been fantastic and I've never had a problem with RMAs and the like. I really like the todayonly section and most of my system is from them.

If people think I'm always too harsh with OcUK - I'll explain why and see what you think.

Phase 1:

My X800XT is 1.5 years old. It starts to display artefacts, so I buy another fan for it - which doesn't cure it. I eventually phone OcUK to see if it was out of warranty. I tell him what has happened and that I've put a Zalman fan on it to try and cure it, to no avail. He says that it is still in warranty and OcUK deal with Powercolour's UK returns and I should stick the old fan back on and return it.

Phase 2:

I do this, 7 days later I phone up to be told that I'll be waiting a month as they've sent it back to Powercolour. FOUR weeks later I phone up and they have no idea what I'm on about and they'll send me a replacement ASAP. I get a nice new X850. Shame when I tried to play a game it screwed up displaying artefacts. I tested various things but no go. I sent it back - two weeks later I get it back and apparently it isn't faulty. So I test it in my mum's partner's PC (he had the exact make and model) and it displayed the same problems in his but his worked fine in mine. So...another £5 to send back. They keep it for another 2 weeks.

Phase 2:

I phone on the Friday and speak to a nice young man who says that I shouldn't have been treated this way. I noticed that on "this week only" they had an X1800XT for £160 and where selling the X850 which they'd given me for £153 or something. I mention this and also mention the £15 I'm down on postage and the months of waiting. He says fine, it'll ship today. Monday comes...nothing. I phone up and get "you must be having a laugh, who'd do that. That would be so stupid why would we do that?" - so I get nothing...next day STILL nothing so I phone up and get someone else. I explain to him and he just sighs (like he doesn't care) and says ok to the X1800XT. I get it next day and it isn't even in an anti-static bag.

Round two - the dell files.

I order a nice dell FPW2005. I was aware that I may get one with back light bleed. For the price I thought I'd go for it. I receive it and sure enough it has bleed – so I phone Dell. I get one next day and it's a refurb with more bleed. I phone Dell again and get through (after a lot of hassle with Dell) to their Scottish call centre (presumably the corporate one). He ships me a new one for next day and apologises. I receive this monitor and it has even more bleed. I decide that I'll get a refund as I use my monitor for films quite regularly and obviously it'll be dark when I watch them (I did then and up until recently when I got my HDTV). I phone OcUK and they say they'll have to receive a refund from Dell before refunding me. They give me the number of their contact at Dell, some American guy named Michael Jones (I think). Anyway he was top notch and knew his stuff. Andy McLane at OcUK said he would refund me as long as Dell had sent them some proof that they would be refunded. Michael at Dell (lol) did this.

A few days later OcUK say they have received the fax and that they will refund me. Andy McLane proceeds to take all of my card details over the phone (maybe a silly thing for me to do). He says the money should go in over night and it'll be sorted. A week later I have nothing and I'm fairly desperate for the £360 or whatever pounds that I'm owed. I phone again and I get the strangest thing.

Andy McLane - “What's this? I don't remember anyone authorising or even talking about a refund. We have nothing from Dell to confirm this. Have you tried phoning them? I should apologise for Dell, really – they are shocking. They are holding things up big style....”

At this point I nearly explode. I'm actually questioning my own sanity at this point. I phone Michael (who is such a sound guy) and he tells me that everything went through when he said it did and he has no idea why they are stalling. I phone OcUK again and get the same crap...but they agree to refund me. A week later I get the cash.

I ended up with a few FPW2005 from Dell though (Michael said it'd probably cost them more to pick it up, rather than leave it).

I know the dell story isn't so bad...but the refund process was shockingly bad. Anyway I was bored so I thought I'd go all out

Today, i've ordered from OCuk.. Order in at 9.30.. Despatched 30 minutes later.. Should have the goods tommorow. Can't argue with that. That's either good service or they aren't too busy

I'm sure about 10 years ago Scan had the reputation of a bunch of scam-mongers. Nice to see that's all changed, I'll start looking at their site again

I stopped buying from ocuk when they sent me some ram that was nothing like what I ordered, and they refused to refund because it wasn't something they even sold. And I stopped buying from Dabs after something similar. Can't remember what it was.

They were awful but are much much better now.

Anyone remember when they used to have Region 1 DVDs on Today Only? I was working in Chelmsford at the time where there was a local record shop who used to import DVDs. When he got new releases in there was always a big queue outside the door as DVD was in its infancy here. He got closed down by FACT and I then bought loads from Scan until they stopped selling imports. Just finding things on DVD was hard work at the time.

Well on the graphics card front - my card was around £153 and the new one was £160. They also owed me £16-20 in postage costs which they said they'd refund, but of course they didn't. Oh and the free dell monitor was really from Dell - not ocuk.

On the two occasions I have ordered from OCUK, the Ram took 2 weeks to get delivered but worked fine, the graphics card was faulty from the start and I had to jump through hoops just to get a RMA. I never did get my postage refunded either.

If you ever send anything back to OCUK and are worried they will just return it, 10 seconds on "chicken" setting in the microwave usually ends up in a new card.

Bah - after all the singing of praises in this thread, I've just had to chase them over an RMA. Support rep couldn't tell me anything I didn't already know either.
