Sometimes views or beliefs are too strong to be ignored.

I was about to say that I don't think religion would put me off someone because I'm really not religious in the slightest. However, if I found someone who was really into their religion and started trying to force their views on me, that'd be the end of it.

Similarly, if Leon tried to purchase a chavved up Clio.... I'd have to seriously re-think our relationship
I basically agree again Kate, although maybe not 100% on the smoking, but its a big downer when i'm with a girl i'm getting on really well with, and then she decides shes needs to go out for a smoke break or something. I think you can physically see my face drop. Depending on how drunk i am usually ( ) or how good we get on, its slightly negotiable, i shouldn't but i also feel like a pr**k for thinking like that too...

Girlfriend was made to attend some strange Church thing at the weekend. Learning about Forgiveness or something. She didn't really want to go, but her parents are quite religious and they'd booked her onto it (at cost), so she went along.

All good and fine - she's religious too - but I made the mistake of asking her what it was about when she got back

I'm /not/ religious in the slightest, so several of the things she said they talked about annoyed me and we had a night-long debate about it all and when I posted I was thinking "oh God [pardon the pun] I can't live with this stuff". You know how these Latin Americans praise God for everything

Fortunately I discovered my gf isn't as religious as her parents which is good. She's now thinking for herself I suppose, so I enjoy challenging her...she tried challenging me too, so it was good fun in the end. When she came out with the religious cliches (eg only God is perfect), I ended up laughing to which she just sighed

In the end we agreed to disagree - actually had a really good debate

I was also reminded of a time when my mum got into a religious debate with one of her friends (also religious, another faith though) who made a slightly off comment, and they didn't get on well again for a while after that

It's just strange - religion is one of those things where people have beliefs they make so personal and will believe at any cost. Their right I suppose, just like as people say here, smoking....people can choose to do it but it ain't for me, so as long as they don't do it around me, that's ok.

Sounds a little bit like a debate a good friend and I had a few years ago, started off by him saying he didn't want me to go to hell. Turned into a good debate though and we agreed to disagree
I know exactly what you mean though Beany, glad it's sorted out now.

My first good thread on BD I think

Now that it's gone a different direction to what I thought when I posted it, maybe it should get moved to News, Current Affairs & Debate *shrug*

At least the debate ended on good terms - that's how all debates should be. Heck, I'm extremely stubborn but I also love to argue/debate and more often than not play devil's advocate or purposely throw the cats among the pigeons.

Anyway it sounds to me like she's independent enough to make up her own mind, but isn't going to let that interrupt or get in between your relationship. I know it might be hard to do it, but you have to try and support her if that's something she's really into and believes strongly in. It's not easy... but at the same time she's got to understand your feelings on it. As long as people are evangelistic about things I can deal with it no probs - it's when it starts becoming personal and "down their nose at me" that it starts to wind me up!

You spooked me there - I thought some bad **** was happening - glad it's nothing bad!

Me too, glad it's all sorted, or at least going in the right direction. The MSN message wasn't about this but the result is certainly welcome.

Aye, I'm stubborn too - it was great to see her being stubborn as well, for once - she's such a mouse normally!
