Definately but they got their act together, and just about everyone knows this. There never used to be a release cycle or anything, just drivers haphazzadly put together. NVIDIA have never changed! Their drivers have always been pot luck, ATI's you can pretty much rely on, and if you have a problem its bound to be fixed the next release, with NVIDIA your graphics card is more likely to be dropped because its old in the newer driver with is tosh. They're useless Huddy, i never used to have anything against them until i had to use one (properly) full time.

What kind of improvement am I likely to see on a 9800GTX over a 320MB 8800GTS if I am playing at 1680*1050...?

Not a great deal, the 9800GTX is basically just a slightly refined overclocked 8800GTS anyway.
It's one of those situations where you'd be silly to pick an 8800GTS over a 9800GTX if you're buying new but you'd be insane to drop £120 on a 9800GTX if you already have an 8800GTS, it's not that much better.
