Drive at 20mph past a school and yes, you'll still get accidents, and yes, maybe just as many as if the limit was 40. The difference is there will be a lot more dead kids rather than a few bumps and bruises and the odd broken bone. |

I was taught to cross the road properly too, but kids are kids, they're more liable to get distracted than an adult. Do you seriously think that trying to ensure road safety is better placed with kids than adults?
In fact, you know what, that's a great idea, we should just put the limits at 40, and leave it entirely up to the kids to ensure nothing goes wrong with such a situation. At the end of the day, the comment was bemoaning having to drive slowly past schools, which is stupid whatever way you look at it. If your attitude to driving is such that slowing to 30 or under past a school is so troublesome to you, it's perhaps better you aren't driving. By all means speed down the motorway, or on empty backroads, but schools have low limits for a sensible reason.

edit - not to mention the comment stemmed from what she'd be answering if she had to answer the kids questions, which would only be happening if she had been speeding.

What a good idea, I bet you won't be speeding again eh? hehe
Everyone speeds a little but near schools is stupid. Kids aren't aware like us. If you want to blame people blame the parents as they should be holding the kids hands IMO or atleast making sure they are close and not crossing until its clear. I have gone to cross roads with my children and had to get back onto path quick because a car came round corner doing 50 in a 30. It was clear and as soon as we stepped out I heard him coming. Lucky I'm not deaf as it would have hit us if we didn't get onto path. |

I have to say in my defence, where I got caught was nowhere near the school at all:
Pic below, red dot is where I got caught, blue dot is where the school and the 20mph zone is: |

I dont know that many places where the speed limit alters for a school, usually it's already a 30 as it's in a built up area. Some go down to 20 I guess, and that would be after a history of incidents.
Seems a typical attitude these days, 'Why should I have to consider other people, it's every man woman, child, deaf, disabled and elderly person for themselves'. All for the sake of 10 mph.
