There are several unique weapons you can find scattered throughout the game world which are well worth trying to track down as they're often much more powerful than the standard weapons and can be repaired using the relevant weapons. I can't remember where they all are now but if you check on x360a I'm sure they'll have a thread about it

I'm waiting for this to get much cheaper as i'm still hugely dubious as to whether I would like it.

It seems to be a bit of a marmite game really, some people like me absolutely love it, others seem to hate it without too many people in the middle. I hate to say that if you enjoyed Oblivion that you'll enjoy Fallout 3, as they're not the same style of game, but I think if you hated Oblivion that perhaps Fallout 3 isn't for you as they do share a lot of the same traits (open world exploration, lots of character interaction, side quests). I prefer the post-apocalyptic wasteland to Oblivion's world though.

I get bored with high levels of 'character management' as in spending half the game arranging your backpack to fit more stuff and things like that.

I loved KOTOR, wasn't keen on Morrowind. Oblivion was ok but didn't really amaze me hugely. I'm much more of a JRPG fan though and I know there's plenty of JRPGs that I adore but others would think were very average.
I think for most people, Davey's summed it up perfectly.

Not really, many people don't pick the perk to up your Special by 1pt as it's "only 1 point", but it can have a massive impact.

For good weapons, get the Terrible Shotgun from Evergreen Mills (there's also a Bobblehead there) by killing the bar keeper.
Other than that, buy Operation Anchorage, you get a really awesome rifle (Gauss Rifle) and some superb Armour. Alternately, you could go to Old Olney sewers (Very North East) and there's some concept armour that injects you with Med-X in battle and pre-warns you when enemies are near (meaning the Perception perks are less important - you can also eat Mentats to up your perception anyway). |

Terrible shotgun acquired
And shock horror, I had fun with Fallout 3 for a bit working my way through the caves
