Only just got around to listening to both Burke's and Buckley's versions and seem to be in the minority in that I prefer Burke's version

Having actually just really listened to the lyrics, it isn't exactly a cheery song...I'll stick to rockin' around the christmas tree me thinks

She belts out it like some kind of uplifting power ballad and really, I don't think most people view the song that way. Trouble is, singing loud = good in a lot of peoples eyes, which is why it's been done I think. It takes real talent to sing gently and still convey a lot of emotion, more so than bellowing at the top of your voice.

Doesn't to me. We might actually get a decent Christmas No. 1 for a change. I'd accept him being locked up on a remote island where no-one can ever hear from him again at a pinch. Bring back proper Christmas No. 1's.

Totally agree. It's also why Leona blows Alexandra away.

It is better than that, Cowell has a record label called Syco, Syco is a division of Sony BMG, Sony BMG owns the rights to Hallelujah. I have even read a suggestion that Cowell will make more out of the success of Hallelujah this Christmas than Leonard Cohen will.

Do people release proper Christmas songs any more though? The fact that The Fairytale of New York is at number 12 in the charts suggests that people want to buy proper Christmas songs (that's the best ever IMO), but there aren't any new ones out there to buy. In the absence of proper Christmas songs to fall in love with, people will buy what they're told to buy. Rightly or wrongly, Cowell is an expert at telling people what we should be buying.
