Shined it up a bit which has made it look a little less sorry for itself. Obligatory pics:

And one of the engine while it's still red and clean

Did you get the water leak sorted? Was it just a case or torquing down the headbolts a bit?

Yes, they all took between 1/4 and 1/2 turn to get back up to torque. It's running great now and no leaks

I've been battling pre-ignition with this engine so I did a little experiment. I know to stop pre-ignition there are a few things you can do. Less timing advance, richer mixture or higher octane fuel. I already tried knocking a few degrees out the timing but I was struggling to get it to idle and it would splutter as you came off idle and got on the gas. I tried 97 octane fuel but the compression isn't high enough to merit this really. Didn't make any difference anyway.

I noticed the splutter disappears when the choke is on when it's cold so there must be a bit of mixture affecting this. I took about 6 degrees out the timing to roughly where I know where the knocking stops, this totally kills the idle so I had to wind the idle speed screw in to compensate. Optimum idle mixture is then when the idle speed is highest so I set it there. BIG splutter this time, as expected with the ignition that far back. Richened the idle mixture until the splutter went and wound the idle screw in more so it would sustain a good idle. Then took it out for a drive...

...absolutely bloody spot on! Right up on power, no knocking on the hills or at revs and it's a lot quieter and smoother. Who'd have thunked it eh? Celebrated by taking it out on the motorway and overtook some trucks. When I change the oil at the weekend I'll take it out and see how fast it goes.

Also won this for the twin carbs:

Twin choke cable off a Europa XS light aircraft. It was the only one I could find that had the 'right' look. Just got to win me that skanky Massey Ferguson +/- 60A ammeter and the dash will be complete
