A mate of mine is interested in the Resi Evil 5 demo coming to market place today but can't afford a subscription at the moment. Can he get this on Silver or as I am a Gold Member (Fnarr Fnarr) can I give him a months free as an intro ??

I'm pretty sure RE5 is available to gold and silver (free) subscribers.

I thought it was Gold only. Usually Silver has to wait a week/fortnight.
He could just sign up another account on his 360 though if he hasn't created all 4 accounts belonging to that console yet.
