Yeah my laptop at home needs some more. It has 512Mb over two sticks and I'd want 1Gb minimum so that'd mean 1 x 1Gb stick or 2 x 512Mb. I've been on the Crucial.com/uk site. A 512Mb stick is £21.14 (so £42.28) and a 1Gb stick is £56.39 which is a bit steep for me at this time. I'd rather get the 1Gb so I can stick some more RAM in there later without having to get rid of an existing stick of RAM.

Seems a bit steep. I'm looking at the Crucial site for mine and a 2GB kit (2x1GB) is £32.89

Crappy Acer laptop is why. I hardly use it. I leave it at home for Mum who seems to be OK with it. Got some spare parts so thinking of making a mini box PC that I can run Linux on. Got 2x1Gb sticks so it'll be a bit better equipped from a RAM point of view.

Nah - it's not the laptop's fault, it's due to it being old(ish) and using DDR. I guess it's the whole economies of scale thing with DDR vs DDR2, but still.

I just realised I think I still have some spare DDR SODIMMS, but they're only 512MB ones so wouldn't have done what you wanted anyway.

So kind of the laptop's fault then?

Yeah DDR2 prices are cheap. DDR prices aren't. The Crucial site can't even get the number of memory slots right. The scanner says I have three. Me thinks, "WTF?!". Me runs it again. Still three. OK so I check the manual. It says two.

Seeing as I'm building a new PC, needing just a case/psu, how much would you want for the sticks? If I build my new PC and can take it home and so permanently donate my laptop to Mum then 1Gb would be brilliant. It'd make things that little bit faster than 512Mb I think.

I need to see if I still have them and what spec they are first. Let me know what Crucial adviser thinks you need.

Of course, if you've already ordered then may as well go with those as they won't be compatible with newer hardware (no use you ending up with spares).

Haven't ordered yet. £56 for a 1Gb stick is a bit steep for me atm. I'd like to go with a 1Gb stick so I can expand RAM using the other slot.

This is what Crucial says.

Just in case you didn't notice, the ones I have will be 512MB each at most. That is if I haven't got rid already. I'll check on Tuesday if that's OK.

2 x 512Mb is 2 x better than 2 x 256Mb. And no probs on the Tuesday wait. I'm at Uni in Salford and not planning on being home until Easter.
