I'll try and explain a bit about the profile thing.
BD started off as a private forum for people who attended the meets I and others organised, as such there was no need to have open access. But over the last year or so we have developed into a vibrant community and we felt that it would be a good idea to open up and give other people a chance to get involved, the members took a vote on it and agreed that we should go ahead with an invite system for people we really want to join us. Because there were people who were less happy about the change we left a small section for established members only and a meet section alongside it. We've been very open with one another because the majority of us have met in real life and in many of the meet posts we have posted our addresses and other stuff, so we decided to lock the section and some of the old posts down and make a new section of the majority of posting. The may be instances where members who don't currently have access to that section are given it but they will be people who regularly attend meets and get involved in the community. Prior to opening the doors BD had nigh on 200,000 posts from ~120 active members and many of them have been archived. We looking into giving people a choice if their public profile can been seen or not, if this can be done then we can reactive the members list, until then I'm afraid user profile will not be viewable. I totally understand about the private forums - really there's no reason for me to post there given that I've never attended a meet (although I would like to one day!) And since you invited me here in the first place I'm willing to believe that you're not slagging me off behind my back in there.
I don't understand why user profile's aren't viewable, though - is it a technical issue, in that you can't have both that and a private forum? Or is it a privacy issue, in that some people have addresses etc. in their profile that they don't want everyone to see? Or some other reason? Edit: This isn't to sound ungrateful or anything; obviously I'm happy to be invited here! I just like to understand things (I guess it's in my nature) and I don't like not having reasons for why things are as they are. Edit(2): Final question. Is the status message under my username editable from the control panel, or can it only be changed by a moderator?

I like that because we as admin prefer to be totally open with the members . We've consulted at every stage of this forum and over almost every change, it seems to be working too Quote:

That's answered a few of my questions too
All of the answers are as I assumed and perfectly reasonable Very glad to have had the invite, and I hope to get myself to a meet one day when I can drive and know the certainty of my future.

heh, I'm in the middle of applying for PhD's so I could be anywhere in the country, or abroad by the end of the year - which is why I've not put myself down for this christmas meet.

Yeah, I read the other thread and saw you said you and the OH weren't going to this one.
Thanks for the kind offer, and I'm sure that I can take you up on it if I am indeed still in the area

Create a custom profile field along those lines and whack in a conditional in the template. Either that or create a custom usergroup with the same permissions as registered users bar the viewable profile and make that usergroup joinable.
