Magnum Force? Great movie but not "Harry" at his best IMHO. |

Mercenaries for Justice
5/10 If you approach it as a brain-off action film. 1/10 If you approach it as a film full stop. Typical "dozen a year" film from Steven Segal, featuring .. umm.. Steven Segal and Luke Goss. Yes, that dude from Bross. Plot follows the usual lines, Segal is a good guy, CIA Black Ops, who finds he's being used by bad guy (Luke Goss doing a very good job with poor material), one of his friends get's killed as a consequence so he goes out on a revenge mission to take out all the bad guys. So far so Segal. Plot line is dodgy, misses few key points along the way expecting things to make sense later on down the line (which they do, but don't make you think "oh right" just "you stupid writers, go back to school") If you switch your brain off and just enjoy it as another Segal vehicle.. well it's a little lackluster in that regard to. Way too little amounts of action in it.

I think I was expecting something totally unrealistic a la Doom, with ridiculous stunts and seemingly invincible characters, and for it to be more like Shoot 'Em Up which I saw recently. Thankfully it seemed to at least have one foot in reality and a little thought in its story structure. Not much originality though, granted.

Yeah, I remember reading the cast list and was blown away. Shame the movie never really delivered.

Are we talking best ensemble casts now? My vote would be for A Bridge Too Far. Off the top of my head: Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins, Elliot Gould, Edward Fox, Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Michael Caine and a few more I've probably forgotten.
Some hooooge names are only on screen for about 5minutes. Curse of the Golden Flower Zhang Yimou cements his reputation for being perhaps the best cinematographer working anywhere by layering each perfectly framed scene with so much sumptious colour it borders on being gaudy. The story deals with a lurid series of intrigues in the Emperors palace that feel more like a greek tragedy than a chinese opera. Feels a bit overcooked and stodgy compared to the lean and lithe 'Hero' and also lacks the emotional depth. You won't see many films as visually spectacular as this though. 7/10

Watched The Godfather last night. Don't think I need to say much except that for those who haven't seen it, you should.
