Decided to give this newsgroup malarky a whirl - Page 7

How are they speedwise compared to torrents? My line at home is roughly 5MB (differs up and down depending on time on day, but that's about right), and my torrents come down pretty slowly, averaging around 30-40kb/s (though it'll double overnight). What kind of speeds would I expect to get on a newsgroup download?

Oooh, sounds good. I get paid at the weekend (and I'm getting a new hard drive) so I'll give it a whirl for a month, and if it's as good as it seems I'll be well happy

Right, I've subscribed to all that as recommended, and using Newzbin found what I wanted (CSI Series 6 DVD 1), and imported the .nzb file into Grabit. It's started downloading but according to Grabit it's currently downloading at 0.00 KB/s (which is strange as I can see stuff downloading).

Am I doing something wrong, or does it take a little while to build up speed?

That sounds odd, what are you getting in the target folder? Is it rars and pars or notepad files? And how old is this nzb? If its very old then the post may have moved off the server, remember that newsgroup files have a limited lifespan and eventually fall of the server, alternatively the update on the download speed maybe set for a very long period?

As far as speed is concerned it tends to fall off at the end rather than build up at the start as you have less threads.

I have one Par file in the target folder, but near 78MB of text files in the cache folder. I'll have a wander around the Grabit site and see if there's anything I should be doing, like opening up ports on my router or something like that.

Edit: I see spikes in the download speed from time to time, to around 280KB/s, which is the kind of speed I obviously want it to sustain at.

Bingo

There is a bug in GrabIt which makes the server group list mandatory. Without this list some downloads from NZB files will not be decoded and result in a lot of text files. The solution is simple:

- Locate the server you are downloading from in the list on the left;
- Right-click on the name;
- In the pop-up menu hit the 'Refresh grouplist'.

This will download a list of available groups for that server and should fix the problem. The text files which are already downloaded can be decoded using any yEnc decoder.

Just done that, and things seem to be working better now. It's still hitting 0.0KB/s from time to time, but also hitting 400KB/s plus. I still think I need to tweak a few things but it now seems to be much better. Cheers MB

Ditch grabit and get a better leeching tool

If you want to trial Newsleecher download it and try it with my registered code, just give me a shout and i will PM it to ya
