LOL! Life-changing decisions are much easier by comparison. At least there's only two choices - do it or do not.
iPhone 16GB Pay&Go + International Caller seems to be the right way to go. Just got to find the £440 to buy one now. |

Why would you fork out £440 for a phone when you get it free on the right contract?
You wouldnt spend that amount on 18 months line rental either! |

On the O2 site, the cheapest contract is £34 a month for 24 months and the phone is £87 even then! They actually seem to be more expensive than when I got my 2G last year! Although guess it makes sense.

Yikes! They offered it me for free on their £35 a month tariff before I had my last upgrade.

I've had my 5800 since the end of March, so it would have been about then. I have been with o2 for as long as ive had mobile phones (and technically therefore as long as theyve existed) and am a "select" customer, so maybe thats why retentions offered me it.

18 months:
£440 phone + £5pm for the first 12 months + £15pm for the next 6 = £590 £185 phone + £30pm for 18 months = £725 £185 phone + £35pm for 18 months = £815 £440 phone + £5pm for the first 12 months + £15pm for the next 12 = £680 £87 phone + £35pm for 24 months = £927 £5pm is a very rough estimate, but based on actual usage (and taking into account top-up offers). I don't talk or text much (though in some ways I wish I did as it would have made choices easier). I do use the web though - 75MB last month and I'm sure I can use more than that. After 12 months I have to add £10pm for web & wi-fi. I do call the USA sometimes. Bizarrely, that's actually 2p/min cheaper on Pay&Go (15p with one-off Bolt-On vs 17p with ITS). £17.62 from the Apple Store (it's just gone up to 4%). Would have been £60 on contract and that nearly suckered me in, but not quite.

We did the same. Swapping from a £30 a month contract each, in reality we barely spend £10 a month on calls and texts so bought the phones on PAYG with the £20 a month saving. Long term, we'll be better off than being tied in to contracts.
