He did his first test for Lotus with a broken back iirc. But the thing to remember is, Mansell is a numpty. How many times has he raced when injured, only to crash and cause further injury?

Also, the forces involved back then were much less. 5g is fairly regular around the tracks. It's close to doubled over the last 20 years.
